Cadettes completed their Silver Award working with Manna Pantry in Yukon
During the 19-20 Girl Scout season, our Cadettes completed their "It's Your Story Tell It" journey. This is a requirement before they start on their Silver Award. The Silver Award is the second-highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve and is completed by Cadettes. The project can be done as an individual or a small group. Each girl contributes at least 50 hours to the project in the way of researching, planning, organizing, and executing the project. The Silver Award Project is girl-led and the leaders are there to advise and assist as necessary. The cadettes then met and started discussions on what type of project to complete. These girls had BIG visions. They discussed revamping the Mustang Fire Department's living quarters to give an old building an updated feel. However, this was not a project that would qualify under the Silver Award. The project must be one that educates the community about a need and also is sustainable after the girls are no longer involved. Other projects were helping the homeless, something with children, helping animals, and many more. The list was very long. Their final decision was Yukon's Manna Pantry.
The Manna Pantry is a food bank in Yukon that services families in the Yukon and Piedmont area. It is a small facility and we found not many people even realized it existed. They knew they wanted to help get the word out. They also wanted to create a simple cookbook that would be distributed to families as they come in to grocery shop. A cookbook used food from the pantry and were simple meals that were easy to make. In addition to the cookbook, they decided to pair it with a food drive. They wanted to get the community involved and educate them on the Manna Pantry's need for donations. This was especially important since we were about to endure the pandemic. They took a tour of the pantry and spoke with staff to determine what types of needs they had along with the type of donations needed. At the time these decisions were made all was normal in the world. Then the pandemic and lockdown hit. This caused some obstacles in planning and organizing but these girls were so resilient. They had many zoom calls to discuss needs and make decisions on creating sections, recipes, and formatting the cookbook. The girls then planned a meeting in which they cooked their recipes, plated them, and took pictures for their cookbook. They then formatted, edited, and proofed their final version and sent it to print.
On July 31, 2020, deep in the midst of the pandemic, our five cadettes: Avery, Maddie, Keaton, Piper, and Kirston presented the Manna Pantry with their cookbooks and held a food drive. The girls advertised on social media and also our leader had a zoom interview with a local news station about what the girls were doing. Because we were in a pandemic, the girls had to think outside the box to keep everyone safe. They set up the donation area like a fast food drive-thru. They had their masks and practiced social distancing as people would drive up. The girls would unload the food from vehicles and one cadette would speak to the person donating, answer questions, and thank them for their donation. At the end of the day, our girls were able to provide Manna Pantry with cookbooks, the PDF file to print more, and over 1,400 pounds of food to replenish their shelves. The event also brought attention to the Manna Pantry which is the whole purpose of the project. Educating the community on the community needs.
